Double Arm Transplant in Latin America for the First Time

by Savitha C Muppala on December 1, 2013 at 12:17 AM

Gabriel Granados, 53, from Mexico, is the first in Latin America to receive a double arm transplant. He is happy to be able to move his limbs and be independent, courtesy the intensive daily therapy sessions which have helped him recover nearly 70% of movement.

While giving instructions to construction workers building a fence, Gabriel Granados had lost both his arms elbow down. He had suffered severe electrical burns in January 2011.

In a ground-breaking surgery, 20 medics took 17 hours to perform a complete double arm transplant. The team of doctors included three anesthesiologists, five nurses and five plastic surgeons. The attached arms were from a shooting victim.

Granados hopes his story will be inspirational and hopes others will willingly become organ donors.

"We unfortunately don't have the culture or organ donation. I thought the same, but today I would (donate an organ). This is the proof that it works."
