Ebola Virus is Losing Grip in Liberia: WHO

by Kathy Jones on November 9, 2014 at 5:22 PM

The fight against the Ebola outbreak in Africa is finally starting to pay off as the number of cases have reduced in Liberia, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced.

However, the WHO cautions that there are thousands of unreported deaths in West Africa as the Ebola outbreak is still wreaking havoc in the neighbouring Sierra Leone and Guinea.

The United Nations said that the global toll is likely underestimated even as Liberia saw a decrease in the number of affected people.

According to the latest data by WHO, the outbreak has officially claimed 4,960 lives and infected 13,042 people.

Christopher Dye, WHO's strategy chief said that there were many missing deaths in the outbreak, estimating that 5,000 fatalities could be missing.

Ertharin Cousin, the head of the UN's World Food Programme said that the "progress can be sporadic" with the Ebola outbreak if we are not vigilant.
