Father Forbidden from Holding Newborn Son as He was Radioactive After Cancer Treatment
A 29-year old father from Yorkshire, England, was unable to hold his newborn son after doctors told him that his cancer treatment has left him highly radioactive which could harm the baby.
Calvin Innes was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and immediately underwent surgery to remove the tumor, just two weeks before the birth of the child.
While the surgery was successful and he was able to recover enough to be with his wife, Kali, for the birth of their son, he was placed on a drug therapy as part of his treatment. However one of the drugs, radioiodine, turned his body radioactive, and doctors asked him not to hold the baby for three weeks as it could harm him.
"When you take the pills you become radioactive and for three weeks I wasn't allowed near my newborn son. I couldn't pick him up, I couldn't feed him, play with him or change his nappy. It was awful because I was having to watch my wife Kali do all these things and I was unable to help. While you're on the treatment, they have to check you with a Geiger counter every day to see how radioactive you are and if you're safe to be around people", he said.
