Royal Philips Electronics NV's combination scanner that can scan the body for cancer using both positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been approved by the US FDA. This Whole Body PET / MR Imaging System accelerates imaging time for patients.

The machine uses PET to identify cancer cells as they absorb chemical tracers. At the same time, they use MRI to view surrounding tissue. This combining system helps improve the diagnosis of cancers and cardiovascular diseases at lower radiation levels than x-rays.

The company is yet to set the price for this product.
