The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the new version of the LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System for evaporative dry eye.

The device heats and massages the eyelids which helps unblock the flow of lipids from the meibomian glands found under the eyelids. The treatment time is about 12-minutes. The press release from TearScience said: This second-generation device allows the physician to treat both eyes simultaneously and includes an upgraded graphical interface that displays treatment temperature, pressure sequence and treatment time remaining. It also records all the data for easy sharing with the clinic's electronic medical record system.

The upgraded LipiFlow will be commercially available in March.
