The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first ever ceramic-on-metal total hip replacement system for use in patients with osteoarthritis.

The FDA confirmed in a news release that the Pinnacle Complete Acetabular Hip System, combining a ceramic ball and a metal socket, has now been approved for use in patients.

The FDA also added that the approval was based on the results of a 2-year study. In this study, 194 people received the new ceramic-on-metal system and 196 people received a metal-on-metal device. There was no difference in the outcomes for the two systems.

The Pinnacle Complete Acetabular Hip System is manufactured by a company called DePuy Orthopaedics.
