Fighting Stress Using Laughter Therapy: Surat Police

by Rukmani Krishnaon June 12, 2012 at 10:01 PM

A laughter therapy session was recently organized by the Surat Police for the officials to cope up with stress.

Studies have found that humour therapy is as effective as widely used anti-psychotic drugs in managing agitation and stress.

In white uniforms, the police officials, both men and women, were seen laughing their heart out.

Deputy Police Commissioner, Surat, V V Rathore believes that the therapy helps them in dealing with stress.

"The training session will have a positive impact on the lifestyle of the police officials because they have a very stressful job. The police officials have a very erratic lifestyle. This laughter therapy is also a form of an exercise, and helps the police officials to do their jobs wholeheartedly," he said.

The department organises the session twice a week.

Police Inspector, Ena Goel expressed gratitude towards the department for organising such sessions.

"We really liked the training session and we are thankful to our senior officials who arrange such sessions for us. Our job is very stressful and we get rid of it by practicing the laughing yoga, which happens twice a week," she said.

According to the instructor, the combination of unconditional laughter and breathing is said to stretch muscles and triggers endorphins - the chemical in the brain known for its feel-good effect.
