The country's first ever kidney transplant surgery between patients of incompatible blood groups was conducted at a hospital in Hyderabad.

Doctors at the Kamineni Super Specialty Hospital conducted the surgery on a patient with blood group O+ with his father, with blood group A+, acting as the donor. This is the first time that such a surgery, known as "ABO Incompatible Kidney Transplantation", has been conducted in the country.

The surgery was led by nephrologist Dr Kamal Kiran and transplant surgeon Dr Srinivas Guttha and was conducted on July 19. The doctors said that using the new technique, an additional 1,500 live donor kidney transplants could be conducted every year.
