The United States first face transplant patient has revealed that he will soon be going home
The United States' first face transplant patient has revealed that he will soon be going home and said that the return of his ability to smell is the best possible thing that could have happened to him since the surgery.
Dallas Wiens had lost most of his face after coming in contact with a high voltage wire back in 2008. The 26-year old had a number of problems including breathing problems and the inability to smell things and had undergone more than 20 surgeries in Dallas.
He then underwent a complete face transplant surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston with the doctors managing to replace his nose, lips, skin, muscles of facial animation and nerves.
Though the doctors were unable to restore his eyesight, Wiens said that the ability to smell things and breathe through his nose are the best things that could have happened following a 15-hour surgery.
