Fish Oil may Not Really Prevent Irregular Heartbeat Post Heart Surgery

A new trial which evaluated the effects of fish-oil supplements in preventing irregular heartbeat that often follows heart surgery, found that these capsules of fish oil cannot prevent atrial fibrilation.

Fish oil capsules with omega-3 fatty acids which were given to patients before and after surgery did not do much to stop the post-op onset of atrial fibrillation.

A trial of more than 1,500 patients led to the discovery that fish oil does not reduce atrial fibrillation, according to study lead author Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, an associate professor of medicine at the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston.

"In this setting, omega-3 fatty acids may simply not have enough power to be effective in preventing arrhythmias," said Marchioli, a cardiologist at the Consorzio Mario Negri Sud in Santa Maria Imbaro, Italy.
