by Sheela Philomena on May 23, 2011 at 1:38 PM

In China over the past eight months the courts in the country have heard 61 cases involving food safety violations and convicted 106 criminals.

Xinhua quoted the statement as saying that the cases involve the production and sale of poisonous or harmful foodstuff, and also food that fail to meet hygienic standards.

Additionally, sentence terms for the convicts, which were handed down during the period from September last year to April this year, were all without chance of reprieve, the statement said.

It also claimed to have punished officials found guilty of being involved in food safety violations.
