Freedom from Needle Pricks?

Diabetic patients may soon experience freedom from annoying needle pricks thanks to the efforts of Ishan Barman. This IIT Kharagpur-trained engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was part of a research team that has developed a method to record blood glucose readings through a beam of light.

"We're now at the proof-of-concept stage - the instrument we use is quite large. But we're trying to develop a laptop-sized device that we hope to have ready within a year," Barman told The Telegraph.

The new method is being tested by researchers at MIT's Spectroscopy Laboratory, who were keen to develop a non-invasive test for measuring blood glucose levels. The method uses the concept of Raman spectroscopy in order to accomplish this aim.

Barman, who is a BTech from IIT-Kharagpur, is pursuing a PhD at MIT. The details of the research appear i n the current issue of the journal Analytical Chemistry.
