A group of researchers from the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority (IAFDA) and Cork University have come up with a novel method of weight loss that involves adding friendly bacteria to your yoghurt.

The bacteria, usually found in your gut, will produce a molecule that will reduce the levels of fatty tissues in your body.

The researchers expressed hope that tailor made yoghurts and drinks will soon be manufactured on a commercial level that will help the general population to lose weight.

Says lead researcher Catherine Stanton, "Fat is not an inert layer around our bodies, it is active and pro-inflammatory. It is a risk factor for many diseases, including cancers."
