Guidelines on When to Resume Sex Life Safely After Heart Attack
The American Heart Association has released new guidelines recommending that patients recovering from heart attacks should stay away from sexual activity
The American Heart Association has released new guidelines recommending that patients recovering from heart attacks should stay away from sexual activity unless they can climb up two flights of stairs or walk briskly without a problem.
The question whether it is safe to resume their sex lives is a major issue among heart attack patients though there is no clear information regarding the question. A panel of experts constituted by the AHA has tried to answer the question and said that having sex after recovering from heart attacks is safe provided the patients can engage in moderate physical activity without any problem.
"Sexual counseling of cardiovascular disease patients and their partners is an important component of recovery; unfortunately, it is rarely provided", the panel wrote in their report.
According to the report published in the Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, majority of the heart attack patients can resume their sex lives provided they are first evaluation by healthcare professionals. However the report warned that those who still experienced symptoms such as chest pain by doing minimal physical activity should not engage in sexual activity unless additional care is given.
