A 62-year old British midwife is offering health pills for new mothers that are made up of ground placenta and promises to provide a number of health benefits including reducing the risk of postnatal depression.
Caroline Baddiley, of Poole, Dorset, revealed that she charges 175 to collect a placenta from the new mother within hours of the birth. She then cooks the placenta in a steamer, dehydrates it and grinds it into fine powder which can then be consumed in the form of a capsule.
Mrs Baddiley said that placenta offers a number of benefits to new mothers including a boost in breast milk production and a reduction in the risk of post-natal depression. She added that she can produce around 120 capsules every day.
"The placenta is a rich source of hormones and chemicals and it's thought that by preserving it, some of those factors can go back to the mother. Taking it in capsule form is certainly more appealing and palatable than the alternative. My customers don't have to handle it or smell or taste it at all", she said.
