International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th every year to evaluate the status of women world over, as well as to underline their all round achievements. As the day approaches, many women's groups, organizations, and charities spread their message globally with varied themes that echo the issues plaguing today's women. This day also provides an opportunity to assess the journey undertaken thus far in the battle for equality and development.

Any kind of social progress needs active participation of women. The objectives of International Women's Day are a reiteration of women's meaningful contribution to society, economy to their own families and to the change they have brought to society.

The United Nations has adopted a theme for International Women's Day, which is "Empower Rural Women - End Hunger and Poverty". Around the world, rural women are still a disadvantaged lot as compared to urban women or for that matter, even rural men.

It must be recognized that rural women have a crucial role to play in uplifting their households and impacting the communities at large by generating income, providing food and nutrition, reducing poverty levels in their communities and taking care of the general well-being of their families.

With their contribution to agriculture and rural enterprises they help in boosting economies both nationally and globally. Yet, all over the world, rural girls and women constantly face obstacles, which come in their way of enjoying their human rights. This adversely affects their lives and those around them.

Unflinching Efforts

The UN has strived for nearly thirty years to meet the objectives on women's rights, gender equality and empowerment. The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on September 14, 2009 for the institution of a new gender equality entity, named GEAR (Gender Equality Architecture Reform Campaign), this has proved to be a valuable shot in the arm to remedy inequalities to women.

This day is a stoic reminder of the accomplishments of women, and also of the unused potential of the fair sex, which if tapped can bring about a meaningful change in the lives of the future generations.

On the occasion of International Women's Day, women must endeavor to use the opportunities available to them. Education, making the right choices, knowledge of one's rights is sacrosanct to empowerment and women must leave no stone unturned in this journey.
