Highlights

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which is diagnosed during pregnancy, is estimated to have affected nearly 14% of pregnant women during the last few decades.

GDM is usually diagnosed during the 24-28 weeks of gestation.

‘Gestational diabetes is one of the most common diseases in pregnancy and could be associated with adverse outcomes and long-term metabolic derangements in the offspring.’

Risk factors affecting GDM include high maternal age, family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, maternal obesity, amongst others.

It was recently proposed that lack of an essential trace element namely selenium' could be associated with the incidence of GDM. Since oxidative stress is linked to etiology and pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus, antioxidants like selenium are proposed to have a protective role.

However, the correlation between selenium status and GDM is still controversial, hence a systematic review and meta-analysis were undertaken to evaluate the relationship between serum selenium and GDM.

However, further well-designed prospective studies are required involving large sample sizes to thoroughly understand the relation between selenium status and GDM risk.
