The World Osteoporosis Day is observed every year on the 20th of October. This year's World Osteoporosis Day addresses postmenopausal osteoporosis, with the slogan, "Strong Women make Stronger Women."

The day, observed by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), brings our attention to a common problem affecting older women called osteoporosis. Osteoporosis results in weakening of bones. Though it does not cause any symptoms by itself, it could predispose a woman to suffering from fractures. This could result in disability in the old age.

There are a number of risk factors that put a woman at a higher risk for osteoporosis. The condition is particularly common in postmenopausal women. A family history of osteoporosis, the presence of thyroid disease and rheumatoid arthritis increase the risk for osteoporosis. Smoking, alcohol, lack of physical activity and low exposure to sunlight are also other factors that can predispose to osteoporosis.

One way to control osteoporosis is to make women aware of this condition. Diagnosis can be made on the basis of simple tests. Medications are also available to treat this condition. Since the condition is symptomless, women realize the problems it causes only after they suffer a fracture and have to bear its consequences.

Other ways in which osteoporosis can be delayed or avoided is by being active and ensuring adequate nutrition. A well-maintained weight reduces the stress on bones and could also delay the onset of osteoporosis.

Women are encouraged to talk about osteoporosis not only with their doctor, but also with other women whom they share a close bond with. The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) offers a simple questionnaire on their website that can help a person know if they suffer from any condition that could put them at a risk for osteoporosis.

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) requests people to wear white on October 20, 2013 to observe the day. Keep this in mind if you wish to support the cause!
