Technology has driven millions of people crazy over smart phones. There has always been a tough competition-turned battle to be on the top. BlackBerry and iPhone can be counted on as two main players in the competition. They both might have different winning qualities and specifications, but iPhone stands out as a winner when it comes to health.

Specialists attending the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), who conducted studies and tests on smart phones, found out that several popular smart phones come with two most common yet harmful allergens-cobalt and nickel. In iPhone, none of these metals were found. But around a third of tested BlackBerry phones had nickel, which can cause skin rashes to people with sensitive skin. An average flip phone contains a whopping amount of 91% nickel and 52% cobalt.

Around 30% of total population in Britain suffers from nickel allergy. The scientists found nickel in the phone buttons, keypad, speakers, camera and metal panels. The scientists believe that both nickel and cobalt cause an allergic reaction that includes itchy patches and dryness in the cheekbones, jaw line and ear areas.

Nickel is a silvery-white metal generally used in alloys due to its capability to resist corrosion. It is normally found in objects such as door handles, scissors, jewelry and is present in some food such as nuts and kidney beans.

After this study, the allergists recommend that people with sensitive skin should not go for BlackBerry phones. If already possess a BlackBerry, then they should limit their prolonged conversations, text messaging and handling their phones if they find any allergy symptoms. Women are more prone to nickel-associated skin allergies which are often noticed when they wear jewelry coated with nickel.

People suffering redness, eczema, itching, blistering, skin lesions near the cheek bones, ears or jaw lines are possible the victim of cell phone allergy. It is advisable to cover up the phone with another plastic case completely to prevent such allergies.

None of these complications were observed with the iPhones, which keeps them a step ahead in the competition.
