Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS):


Commonly referred to as PMS, is experienced by about three in four women at some point in their lives. It encompasses a range of physical and emotional symptoms occurring in the days leading up to menstruation. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD):

Symptoms of PMDD include depression, irritability, tension, anxiety, mood swings, and changes in appetite. PMDD symptoms typically emerge one to two weeks before menstruation and subside with the onset of menses.

The exact cause of PMDD remains uncertain, but it is believed to involve abnormal responses to normal hormonal fluctuations, potentially linked to serotonin deficiency in the brain. Certain risk factors, such as a family history of PMS or mood disorders, may predispose women to PMDD (3).
