A new oral contraceptive pill that is being launched in Australia delays the periods in women by four months.

According to Dr Christine Roke, national medical advisor at Family Planning, the new Yaz Flex pill, which allows women to get their periods once in every four months, is a safe and effective contraceptive pill, which comes in a small dispenser that notifies women as to when they should take the pills and warns them if they are late. It also notifies women if they need to use condoms, or any such contraception, after they have missed taking a pill.

Dr Roke said the new pill could actually decrease the chance of falling pregnant. With the standard Yaz pill, there are chances of women falling pregnant but with the new pill, the chances of pregnancy are drastically reduced.

Besides, the women taking the pill bleed just once in four months in contrast to the monthly bleeding that women normally have. Also, the reminder system that the new pill is part of is very convenient and is very useful for those who tend to forget pills.

Dr Roke said that there was no need to bleed every month, contrary to popular belief. The new pill is seen as a move to encourage young people to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health. It now appears that this very useful pill may not be available in New Zealand due to its high costs.
