Back to the basics' seems to be the cue for healthy eating and as this year's theme is Eat Right With Color', plan on adding color by including more fruits and vegetables. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend more focus on a plant-based diet, combining it with lean meats, fish and poultry, and low-fat milk and dairy products.
Now, in 2011, it has been recommended that we forget all diet fads and focus on what people ate in the healthy past - fresh vegetables and fruits, cheese, milk, soup, homemade bread and milk.
Setting simple goals instead of following some highly-hyped diet fad helps in building up a healthy nutrition program. Eating less of salt and sugary foods; eating smaller portions; adding fresh and dried herbs to flavor foods instead of salt; including more vegetables to soups; eating a little extra when it comes to fruits; all these actions are not earth shaking, but are sensible and practical, setting us on the path to healthful eating.
