Here's Why Labrador Retriever Can't Stop Obsessing About Food
Dogs are always hungry and one of its breeds Labrador Retriever is known for their increased appetite. But why are they so much obsessed with food?
A new study has reported that faulty genes contribute to hunger pangs and food cravings among these dogs. The lead author of the study, Dr. Eleanor Raffan, from the University of Cambridge said that Labrador topped the obesity lists in the UK and food motivation is one of the main reason behind the rise.
‘Labradors carry a faulty gene known as PMOC, which could predispose them to food-seeking and weight gain.’
They analyzed the genome of 18 lean Labrador retrievers and pointed out the genes associated with obesity. Finally, they narrowed it down to one particular gene known as PMOC, which plays a crucial role in suppressing hunger when the body has energy reserves laid down as fat.
After this, they examined 310 labrador dogs and found out that most of these dogs missed the PMOC gene. PMOC deletion was the reason for the greediness among these breeds. They also found that the PMOC gene was missing among assistance dogs, helping them train quickly with food rewards.
Dr. Raffan said, "We know POMC is important to humans and finding out more may lead to better treatment of human obesity."
