Incompetent Radiographer was Hired After Skype Interview

by Kathy Jones on June 15, 2013 at 2:31 PM

An Indian radiographer who was fired by the NHS after just two months on the job was reportedly hired after an interview on Skype.

Manik Sharma was awarded a contract with the Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust with a potential annual income of 34,000 after he impressed his interviewers on Skype. However he shocked his colleagues after taking up the job, with one of his co-workers describing him as having the expertise of a first year university student.

He was also reported to make phone calls and walking out on patients whom he was supposed to be treating. Mr Sharma was finally reported to the Health and Care Professions Council who took action by suspending him after failing to meet the minimum level of competence required for a newly qualified radiographer.

"It was clear that Mr Sharma never reached a level of competence where he could practice autonomously. He never reached a stage when he could work without constant supervision. The panel has identified a number of serious deficiencies in Mr Sharma's practice", the chairman of the disciplinary panel, Stephen Fash said.
