A University of Minnesota research has revealed that the increased use of added sugar in the United States has directly seen a rise in obesity across the country.

Researchers from the university's School of Public Health analyzed the nutritional snapshots of the populations of 30 major cities across the United States and found that as the usage of added sugar increased among both men and women, so did the Body Mass Index (BMI).

The rising obesity came about even though the total fat content in the diet reduced over the years. "We're looking at trends. We looked at them in women and men, and in both men and women, added sugar intake increased since 1980. At the same time, BMI has also increased", lead researcher Lyn Steffen wrote in the report.

The study was presented at the American Heart Association conference in Atlanta on Thursday.
