India Plan to Rope in 15,000 Retiring Doctors from United Kingdom

If all goes well, the perennial problem of doctors' shortage in India will be resolved soon.

To provide respite to the short-staffed hospitals across the country, the Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (GAPIO) is trying to bring in services of about 15,000 retiring Indian-origin doctors from the United Kingdom.

‘Most medical institutions in India do not have the required number of faculty. Now, the GAPIO is trying to bring in services of about 15,000 retiring Indian-origin doctors from the United Kingdom.’

According to a report, around 50,000 of the 1.2 million Indian doctors in the world are in the U.K. and 15,000 of these are retiring soon.

Ramesh Mehta, GAPIO vice-president and president of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) told a newspaper that young graduates are seeing bigger opportunities in India.

"It is not because they are facing problems outside India, but just because of the wide spectrum of opportunities in India. From a hundred such doctors, the number is steadily growing," Dr. Mehta said.

He also said India had been proactive in making it legally possible for Indian clinicians practicing worldwide to work in India.

"We will work towards getting Medical Council of India (MCI) registration for those who are not registered here," Dr. Mehta added.

Noting that most teaching hospitals and medical institutions do not have the required number of faculty, Dr. Mehta said the services of the retired doctors would come in handy for India.
