Indians Prefer Losing Limbs Rather Than Eyesight

by Kathy Jones on July 19, 2012 at 9:45 PM

An international survey carried out by leading eye care giant, Bausch and Lomb, reveals that majority of the Indians are willing to lose their limbs, or their lives, instead of losing their eyesight.

The survey, titled Barometer of Global Eye Health, was conducted by KRC Research and involved more than 11,000 participants from India, Brazil, China, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UK, Russia, Japan and the US.

Nearly 70 percent of the participants said that they valued their eyesight more than their lives or a limb while over three-fourths of the participants were willing to lose their sense of hearing or taste rather than eyesight.

Bausch and Lomb's chief medical officer Cal Roberts added that a large majority of people only go for an eye checkup if there is any problem. "Most people do not understand the connection between the eyes and overall health. Getting regular examinations not only helps preserve one's vision but also can provide early detection of other serious diseases", Roberts said.
