Dr Hrishikesh Pai, Consultant Gynecologist and infertility expert from Fortis Bloom IVF Centre has revealed that in many cases infertility results from delay in having kids.

"The delay in planning pregnancy, due to stressful and busy professional lives, aggravates the problem of infertility in both the partners. When a woman fails to conceive even a year after trying for a baby, the couple is said to be infertile,'' Dr Pai said. Dr Pai also expressed concern that most people from Punjab tried to ensure that they would have a male child only.

He added that while many couples were opting for IVF procedures to have kids, it was important to remember that infertility was not a problem for women alone. In 40% of infertility cases, men often have low sperm counts.

"The lifestyle, working environment, smoking and alcohol are the top culprits in affecting sperm count. However, injudicious use of toxins (pesticides and insecticides) is another factor in increasing the infertility rate all over the world," he said.
