Innovative Treatment Seeks to Freeze Breast Cancer
A pioneering method of treatment is attempting to do away with surgery in treating breast cancer by freezing the tumor cells with the help of a super cooled syringe.
The technique has been developed by an Israel-based company called IceCure Medical and works by freezing the tumor cells after the syringe, cooled to -170C, is repeatedly inserted into the cancer tissue and then defrosted, which leaves the tumor cells damaged.
The treatment time is just 15 minutes and is seen as a more effective alternative to surgery.
"There have been attempts before to use heat to destroy cancer cells like this, but that can be extremely painful because our bodies are very sensitive to heat. We have developed the system so it can be carried out in a normal doctors' surgery as it is minimally invasive and relatively quick', IceCure's chief executive, Hezi Himmelfarb said.
