Young Adults in US Have Better Access to Health Care when covered by parents' health plans

The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has favorably influenced young adults' chances of having a physical exam at their doctors' and access to health care.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act had made it compulsory for health insurance companies to cover young adults up to age 26 under their parents' health plans.

Before this, 34 states in the US had similar laws, but the upper age limit and other eligibility criteria differed from one state to another. Young adults between the ages of 19 and 29 years, nearly 30 percent of adults under 65, went without health insurance.

That was because they weren't allowed to continue on their parents' premiums, or didn't have jobs that offered them employer-based plans.
