Intelligent Parents Have Higher Risk of Having an Autistic Child
Is there any link between high achieving parents and autistic children?
Scientists at the Cambridge University are testing whether intelligent parents have a higher risk of having an autistic child. They are looking for clues if the occupation and university choices of high-achieving parents affect the chances of their child developing the condition.
The researchers want to study couples who have studied and work in the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering or maths). They are recruiting graduates to survey the development of their children along with the subject studied at university to test the theory.
Previous research conducted in 2001 has found that mathematicians had higher rates of autism than other professions. While, a study in 1997 found that children and grandchildren of engineers were more likely to be autistic.
The results of this study will be available in 12-months
