It is Not the End of the World Yet

The end of the Mayan Long Count calendar on December 21st was predicted by many as the beginning of the apocalypse and perhaps the end of the world at 11.11 GMT.

Though many thousands of people were simply wondering what would actually happen on the so-called "Doomsday" December 21, the time came and passed off uneventfully.

According to the calendar, the date signifies the end of an era which has lasted over 5,000 years, or 13 "bak'tuns".

As the day approached, there was lot of information circulating on the internet and there was concern about mass suicides, a magnetic shift in the poles, power cuts, and a collision with an unseen planet hurtling toward Earth.

Scholars and scientists clarified that the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar did not signify the end of the 13th bak'tun in the civilization's calendar but was simply the beginning of a new cycle.

"The whole thing was a misconception from the very beginning.The Maya calendar did not end on Dec. 21, 2012, and there were no Maya prophecies foretelling the end of the world on that date," said Dr. John Carlson, director of the Center for Archaeoastronomy.
