Life Care Gets CE Mark for Keyhole Cup Laparoscopic Access Device

by Kathy Jones on April 30, 2013 at 10:02 PM

New York-based Life Care Medical Devices Ltd revealed that it has received the CE mark of approval for its Keyhole Cup Laparoscopic Access Device for use in laparoscopic surgery.

The current procedures involved in initial surgical access to the abdominal region involve fully manual procedure either through a veress needle or a cut down procedure known as the Hassan technique.

However these techniques are slow and often come with a risk of injury to organs lying beneath the abdominal wall such as the intestines. However applying negative pressure to the dome shaped Keyhole Cup device allows the safe and rapid entry of a veress needle by the separation of abdominal wall from the underlying organs.

"While surgical equipment advances and technique improvement have been an integral part of the development of the laparoscopic surgery market, the initial first step of access to the abdominal cavity has remained static. Our Keyhole Cup Laparoscopic Surgery Access Device gives the surgeon a method for rapid, consistent, and safe access to the abdominal region", the CEO of Life Care Medical Devices, Glenn Foley said.
