Lupin's Methergine Tablets for Postpartum Hemorrhage Now Hits US Markets
Lupin has bolstered its portfolio by introducing the generic Methergine brand into the US markets. Methergine (methylergonovine maleate) tablets are used for preventing excessive blood loss during delivery.
Postpartum Hemorrhage or excessive bleeding is one of the prominent preventable causes of maternal mortality. More than half of maternal deaths occur in the first 24 hours of delivery and mainly due to excessive blood loss. Therefore, Lupin's Methergine tablets can help in the management of postpartum hemorrhage.

"The re-introduction of Methergine is a proud moment for Lupin, but also an important moment for expectant mothers across the country to feel confident in care options. With Methergine, Lupin is making a significant investment to help improve the management of PPH, providing professional medical education, leveraging its specialized sales force to drive better awareness and access to care, and ensuring a more stable supply of this essential medicine," said Paul McGarty, president, Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Methergine is a semi-synthetic alkaloid that can be used for routine management of hemorrhage and subinvolution of the uterus following delivery of the placenta and also to control excessive bleeding after labor.
It is available as an oral tablet in the strength of 0.2 mg that should be administered three to four times a day for up to one week in the post-natal period. It helps in increasing contractions in the uterus, leading to restriction in blood loss.
