Majority of People Do Not Discuss Organ Donation
A new survey has found that almost 60% of people do not discuss organ donation with friends and family.
A new survey has found that almost 60% of people do not discuss organ donation with friends and family.
This is an appalling figure as the waiting list for organs crossed 8,000 in the UK. The NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), which is the organ donation foundation in the UK, has urged people to discuss donating organs with their family and friends.
A spokeswoman for the organization said that just about 28% of the people are on the NHS Organ Donor Register.
"Organ donation is a tricky subject to talk about so many people choose to ignore it rather than face the reality," said Professor Geoff Beattie, head of school and dean of psychological sciences at the University of Manchester. He added that it was important to speak with family and friends about organ donation "as any of us could be forced to make that difficult decision for our loved ones - you'll want to know their wishes."
The NHSBT has asked people to register at organdonation.nhs.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.
