A new study published in the journal, The Lancet Infectious Diseases warns that even a single episode of malarial infection during the first trimester of pregnancy increased the risk of a woman suffering from miscarriage.

More than 16,500 women in Thailand took part in the study conducted by researchers from the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit who found that suffering from malaria in the first trimester increased the risk of miscarriage by more than three times.

The researchers also found that using antibiotics to treat malaria had no negative side effects and did not increase the risk of miscarriage.
