Many Afghan War Veterans in the Throes of Mental Illness

A study of medical records of 3000 soldiers has pointed out that nearly 25% of combat veterans and more than 13 per cent of all troops involved in the Afghanistan operation

A study of medical records of 3000 soldiers has pointed out that nearly 25% of combat veterans and more than 13 per cent of all troops involved in the Afghanistan operation till 2008 are all battling different types of mental illness.


Statistics show that out of 792 soldiers who fought in Afghanistan in 2007, nearly 20% were victims of posttraumatic stress disorder, while 3.1 per cent were in the throes of depression.

A study of medical records of 2,045 soldiers who served from 2001 to 2008 found that 8 per cent were victims of posttraumatic stress disorder. Further, 5.2 per cent were battling other mental-health illnesses.
