More than three fourths of New Yorkers consume twice the amount of sodium salt, thereby increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke, the city's Health Department said.

According to the initial findings, an average New Yorker consumed over 3,150 milligrams of sodium, twice the recommended amount.

Over 1,700 adults were included in the study with the health department conducting urine sample tests.

The study found that over 79 percent of New Yorkers consumed excess salt, usually from packaged food or restaurants.
