More and more people in Australia are using the mental health helpline to ask questions regarding suicide related problems, a new survey carried out by SANE Australia reveals.

SANE Australia, which operates the mental health helpline said that it received nearly 10,000 calls in the past 12 months and more than 2 percent of the calls was related to suicide with the majority of them coming from Tasmania.

Another growing area of concern was calls related to work-place issues with employers wanting to know how they can support their co-workers who are suffering from mental illness. The report added that more than 43 percent of the calls were from well-wishers seeking advice for someone they knew while 38 percent of the calls were related to the individual caller.

A large number of calls are related to getting that somewhere to live, having jobs to do and then following that we would have people who are actually asking for information about how's and where's they can get treatment for their illness, SANE Australias executive director, Barbara Hocking said.
