Among all types of skin cancers, melanoma is by far the deadliest. A cure from melanoma is possible only if this cancer is detected early enough before its spread to the lymph nodes, tissues and organs.

According to a report published in the February issue of the Archives of Dermatology, the prognosis is good for 80 percent of melanoma patients. The risk of disease recurrence is also very high among melanoma survivors.

According to Dr. Cynthia Holterhues and her colleagues at the department of dermatology at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, far more serious reactions occur in female melanoma survivors , than men. It was also revealed that female survivors of the skin disease could suffer abysmal physical and mental health.

Male survivors of melanoma did not take as much caution in protecting themselves and their families from harmful UV radiation.
