Men's Testosterone Levels Improve With Weight Loss

by Savitha C Muppala on June 27, 2012 at 8:32 PM

A new study has found a connection between weight loss and improved testosterone levels.

During the study, researchers found that 50% of overweight, middle-aged men with pre-diabetes and low testosterone levels who lost weight by altering their lifestyle experienced an increase in testosterone levels.

"Doctors should first encourage overweight men with low testosterone levels to try to lose weight through diet and exercise, before resorting to testosterone therapy to raise their hormone levels. Losing weight not only reduces the risk of prediabetic men progressing to diabetes but also appears to increase their body's production of testosterone," said study researcher Dr. Frances Hayes, a professor at St. Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin.
