Freddie Allen was infected with a killer virus after his mother suffered from erythema infectiosum or "slapped cheek" syndrome. In kids, this infection usually results in redness on the cheek and a mild fever, but because Freddie was infected inside the womb, there was a buildup of fluid inside his body.
The infection was noticed during a routine scan and the Allens were told Freddie had little chances of survival. He underwent a blood transfusion to save his life at Kings College, London. The procedure was carried out by professor Kypros Nikolaides, but tragedy struck when Freddy's heart ruptured. However the surgeons performed surgery and saved his life.
"Freddie was my third child and I knew I should stay away from people who smoke, not to drink and those sorts of things, but I had no idea that this small infection could kill my baby, I think there needs to be a lot more awareness about," Freddie's mother Deanna told the Daily Mail.
Freddie is now a healthy boy, but the family said that the nightmare they lived through was caused by a simple bug, about which would-be parents should be made aware of.
