Mistletoe may Help Treat Colon Cancer

by Kathy Jones on December 24, 2012 at 8:39 PM

Mistletoe has been long associated with holiday romance but the plant may have another important use after researchers found that it can help treat colon cancer.

A team of researchers at University of Adelaide found that mistletoe extract can be more effective when dealing with colon cancer compared to chemotherapy without affecting the normal tissue cells that are also destroyed by conventional treatment.

"Our laboratory studies have shown Fraxini mistletoe extract by itself to be highly effective at reducing the viability of colon cancer cells. At certain concentrations, Fraxini also increased the potency of chemotherapy against the cancer cells", lead researcher Zahra Lotfollahi.
