Most Pregnant Women Take Sick Leave

Nearly 75% of pregnant women take sick leave from work at some point during their pregnancy, according to a new survey of 2,918 pregnant women conducted by Stavanger University Hospital in Norway.

The common reasons for the leave happened to be fatigue, problems with sleep, nausea, vomiting, and pelvic girdle pain.

The study also found that when employers were more accommodating in the work schedules, women happened to take fewer sick leaves than those women working under rigid schedules.

'While past medical history and socioeconomic conditions can influence the occurrence and length of time taken off as sick leave, women's working situations during pregnancy were significant contributors to our findings. This study shows a clear link between working conditions and the duration of sick leave, which highlights the potential benefits for employers to have a support system in place,' researchers said.
