Mothers at Late Age?
Compared to the 1970s when women became first-time mothers at the ages between between 23 and 25, women, today, cross their 30th year before having their first child.
Although there are a number of reasons for postponing this important milestone, mostly to do with having a successful career and achieving financial security, women face a lot of risks.
Besides a decrease in fertility, they face the risk of having a baby with Down's syndrome. They are also more likely to suffer a miscarriage or a stillbirth. Premature birth or having a low weight baby could be other problems they may have to face.
Modern research and technology are available to older women, and they can become mothers with assisted reproductive technology (ART), from IVF, GIFT, ZIFT, and donor eggs.
Nevertheless, the suggestion has been made that there should be a cut off age for assisted reproductive procedures too.
