Private Building Sprouts in Government Hospital, Mystifies Medical Staff
The medical staff at the hospital perplexed as a private building came up inside Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, India, on a space, which had previously held the office of health inspectors.
The private building, in the form of a canteen had come up on the space, which previously housed the office of health inspectors. According to doctors, the authorities had claimed they had not given permission for the construction of the building.
Dr K Senthil, president, TNGDA, said, "The building was constructed in the broad view of PWD (public works department) officials. However, the officials, who say they have not given any permission for the construction, did not act to stop it. Government land cannot be taken for granted. We suspect foul play in the issue of permission. The new has to take necessary action."
Doctors from Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGA), who expressed surprise at the new development, have sought action from the dean.
The doctors association has now sought action from the new dean of Madurai Medical College and Government Rajaji Hospital, Dr Revwathy Kailai Rajan since no action was reportedly taken during the tenure of the previous dean.
Senthil said, "The doctors and hospital workers in the hospital who came back to the hospital after one Sunday, could not see the building. We were shocked."
Former collector Anshul Mishra, who conducted an inspection at the hospital premises in 2012, had instructed the then dean Dr N Mohan not to provide any extension of time to the canteen.
However, extension had still been granted and the canteen continued to function till it was demolished recently.
