In an effort to promote the spiritual practice Yoga in China, India Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started tweeting daily in Chinese social media on Yoga postures and their importance.

In his tweet in Weibo - akin to Twitter in China - on June 1, PM Modi called on Chinese enthusiasts to take part in the events in a big way.

June 21 was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014.

Yoga, a more than 6,000 year-old physical, mental and spiritual practice had its origin in India. The practice aims to transform body and mind. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of 21 June as International Day of Yoga by Narendra Modi during his address to the UN Assembly on September 27, 2014.

In his tweets on Chinese social media Sina Weibo PM Modi detailed the intricacies of various Yoga postures like Tadasana, Vrikshasana and Padahastasana and their health benefits.

Source said that the Indian Embassy and the Consulates in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Guangzhou are holding a series of events to commemorate June 21st as International Yoga Day.

Besides holding a number of Yoga events in Beijing and all top cities with local Yoga organizations in China, the mission is organizing a five-day International Yoga meet from June 17 to 21 in Chengdu.
