Nearly 2,000 Girls Killed Every Day in India

Maneka Gandhi, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, India stated that about 2,000 girls are killed every day in the country, adding that it is a matter of national shame.

"About 2,000 girls are killed every day in India and this is a matter of shame for any society," Maneka said during the launch of the national programme of 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' (Save girl child-Educate girl child) campaign.

"It has become a matter of existence of women as the sex ratio has declined to 914 [per 1,000 males]," she added.

Maneka also said that Haryana is the state with the lowest sex ratio which ranges between 875 and 837 in certain districts ranges, pointing towards a high rate of female foeticide.

The 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign is the fourth major initiative by the Narendra Modi-led Central government after the 'Jan Dhan Yojna', 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' and 'Make in India'.
