Neglect and Harassment in Care Homes

It has come to light that vulnerable patients are becoming victims of neglect in care homes. Nearly 1100 residents have died of thirst in the last ten years.

Government figures have pointed out that nearly 1,158 care home residents died of thirst and severe dehydration between 2003 and 2012. An age charity has condemned these figures as an �utter disgrace'.

Reports reveal that the death rate is still more than 100 a year on average, or two every week.

Dr Alison Cook, a director at the Alzheimer's Society, said: �How can we call ourselves civilised when people are left to starve or die of thirst? It is an utter disgrace that they are ever left without the most basic care.'

A report by health watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has found that people in care homes were denied privacy, were inadequately fed or plain ignored'.

The commission conducted many unannounced visits to sites and staff were heard dismissing elderly people as �lost causes'.
