New Recommendations Issued by World Trade Center Health Program Advisory Committee

Medical care and compensation provided to those who were exposed to toxic chemicals during the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001 will now be expanded to include 14 types of cancers as recommended by the World Trade Center Health Program advisory committee.

The administrator of the program, Dr John Howard revealed that it will now provide coverage for certain types of cancers including those of lung, trachea, stomach, colon, rectum, liver, bladder, kidney, thyroid and breast.

Dr Howard added that while there is a lack of definitive scientific evidence connecting the September 11 attacks to cancers, the decision was taken based on the presence of known carcinogen at the attack sites. "We recognize how personal the issue of cancer and all of the health conditions related to the World Trade Center tragedy are to 9/11 responders, survivors and their loved ones", he said.
